On this episode of the You Inspire Me Podcast, Hope had the opportunity to interview her dear friend, Ellen Dunlavey. Ellen says that “when you are inspired [and] doing something you don’t feel like it’s as hard… it’s not you who is pushing yourself to do it, but it feels easy like it’s not a burden.” Ellen is inspired by so many things, including her quiet time in the Bible and her family. Ellen is a wonderful friend, a true joy, and an humble servant of God.

References

  • Ellen lives in our nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., which has 3 electoral college votes (Hope mistakenly said 1 in the show)
  • She shares that she came to have a personal relationship with God during her time at American University and alongside her friend and mentor, Sarah
  • Right now, Ellen is doing a plan to read the Bible chronologically in a year
  • Ellen shared Romans 5:1-5 (ESV) with us which reads, “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”

Episode 11: Everything is Going to Be Fine because God is in Control with Mrs. Angela Oakley
Episode 11: Everything is Going to Be Fine because God is in Control with Mrs. Angela Oakley

On this episode, I had the phenomenal joy of chatting with Mrs. Angela Oakley. To Mrs. Oakley, inspiration “is finding motivation on a regular basis.” The Oakley’s are known by West Point cadets for being very generous hosts, especially for “Carnivorous Christmas” and Easter lamb decorating! Mrs. Oakley shares about being a military spouse, bringing cadets into their home, and pursuing grace in every moment. It is my greatest honor to welcome Mrs. Oakley to the You Inspire Me Podcast.

References:

  • Mrs. Oakley says her favorite titles are “wife” and “mother” with “Army spouse” as a close contender
  • At West Point, Mrs. Oakley likes to get inspiration by walking their two dogs down to Lee Gate – a common run route for cadets
  • Mrs. Oakley is now working her dream job with the Association of Graduates (AOG) as a Major Gift Officer
  • The Oakley’s had originally planned to do “5 and fly” – get out of the military at the end of the minimum service obligation – and here they are now, a career military family!
  • To recharge, Mrs. Oakley puts on some hard rock music and goes on walks
  • The Oakley’s have also taken on a personal calling to share their experiences and knowledge about debt-free living with others founded on Dave Ramsey’s principles
  • Mrs. Oakley shares that she tries to find inspiration in someone, whether in her life or via a podcast or other platform, every single day to lift her up
  • Her favorite Taylor Swift song is “22,” although Mrs. Oakley’s inspirational lady is Dolly Parton

Episode 10: People Throw Rocks at Things that Shine with Genevieve Oakley
Episode 10: People Throw Rocks at Things that Shine with Genevieve Oakley

On this episode, I have the privilege of interviewing Miss Genevieve Oakley, a young lady currently residing in West Point, New York and in the eleventh grade. Genevieve defines inspiration as “the culmination of ideas and people and events” that have led her to what she believes in and what she hopes to “achieve in life.” She identifies some of the most inspiring people in her life being her parents and Taylor Swift. One thing you will learn from this interview is that this life has some BIG plans for Miss Genevieve Oakley!

References:

  • Thanks to the Army, Genevieve and her family have moved ELEVEN TIMES so far in her life!
  • Genevieve is the Outreach Assistant and a Journalist for Bloom: Empowering the Military Teen, a blog run by and for military teens around the world.
  • Her interests and passions including writing, politics, and singing along to Taylor Swift
  • Currently investigating potential colleges and universities to attend, Genevieve has some prospects with the Ivy Leagues, including Dartmouth (partly because it’s one of the “coldest colleges in America”)
  • Genevieve’s biggest passion is striving towards making positive change in this world and helping others
  • The confidence that Genevieve has developed within herself has come from mental health struggles when feeling isolated, and she works to help her friends and other young women build up their confidence, too
  • Genevieve is a huge inspiration to me in how she focuses on her mental health and advocates for others in that way – please seek help if you are struggling with mental health: the National Suicide Helpline is 800-273-8255; the crisis text line is  can be reached at TALK to 741-741; and more resources can be found HERE. • “Be kinder to people than you feel in heart.”
  • Her favorite Taylor Swift song is Mean from Speak Now
  • Genevieve shared a quote from Taylor Swift’s song Ours, “don’t you worry your pretty little mind, people throw rocks at things that shine”

Episode 9: Pain is Just Weakness Leaving the Body with Hannah Waite
Episode 9: Pain is Just Weakness Leaving the Body with Hannah Waite

On this episode, I interview my dear friend Hannah Waite, whom I first met as a roommate at the Naval Academy Summer Seminar, a summer camp for rising seniors considering attending the Naval Academy. Although neither of us nor our third roommate and friend, Kristine, did not attend the Naval Academy, we are all thankful that it brought us lifelong friendship in one another! Hannah describes inspiration as an intrinsic thing within side each of us that is motivated by external things – people, places, things, experiences, everything that happens to us! She also shares that everything inspires her, either positively or negatively, to live her life to further bring joy to others and fulfill God’s plan for her life.

References:

  • Hannah is in school working towards achieving her Master’s in Speech Language Pathology at University of Southern Mississippi (USM)
  • Hannah’s husband, Aaron, inspired her to take time when she is driving to intentionally talk out loud with God in prayer.
  • She shares that she struggled with an eating disorder for about four years
  • If your or someone you know struggles with an eating disorder, please seek professional help. You can find resources to get started HERE or call or text the National Eating Disorders Helpline at 800-931-2237.
  • Her advice to anyone struggling with an eating disorder is to “tell somebody”
  • One of Hannah’s life goals is to own a Chick-Fil-A (how awesome is that?!)
  • Hannah’s favorite quote stuck with her after doing a flexed arm hang at a summer fair for the Marine Corps, “pain is just weakness leaving the body.”

Episode 8: Dwelling Together in Unity with Nako Caternor
Episode 8: Dwelling Together in Unity with Nako Caternor

On this episode, I have the great joy of chatting with my friend and classmate, Nako Caternor. Nako is a shining light for Jesus Christ and uses her gift and calling to help others on every part of her journey. She defines inspiration as, “something or someone motivating you intrinsically to make a certain type of change.” Nako is most inspired by her mother (and so am I now!) who graduated in the inaugural class that allowed women at the Ghana Military Academy, and she is now a minister. Nako lives her life treating others with love and respect, especially because she doesn’t always know what others are going through.

References:

  • Nako appreciates walking alongside others to help them, just as team leaders supported her in her journey of passing West Point’s “Survival Swim” class
  • Her advice to people who are struggling is, “don’t stay alone,” and she advocates for doing life with others and in a supportive community
  • A long-term goal of Nako’s is to get a doctoral degree someday, and her daily goal is to help others
  • She shares her two boundaries for helping people: (1) help people who are accepting of help and (2) help people who genuinely want to grow and not stay stagnant
  • Nako left us with an inspiring song she sang with the Glee Club at West Point that also contains inspiring Bible verses, specifically Psalm 133, Chichester Psalms

Lili is someone who not only pursues her own dreams but also creates her own path with a smile as she does it! Although she shares how she has faced adversity on her journey, she describes how she always makes the most out of every opportunity she has. Lili defines inspiration as the “deeper sister to motivation,” and shares her analogy of stoking the fire to provide us with a visual for her inspiration.

References:

  • Her inspiration for serving and attending West Point dates back to when she was 12-years-old, and she has never stopped pursuing her dreams!
  • Lili shares how she was continuously inspired by her teammates on the Women’s Army Rugby (WAR) teammate at West Point, and she even gives a shoutout to Ashley Wolfe from Episode 2
  • She was a Defense Strategic Studies (DSS) major at West Point and also cross-commissioned into the U.S. Air Force to be a pilot
  • Her advice to others is to just “jump in,” as she provides us with the vignette of jumping into a cold lake and the excitement, fear, and adventures new opportunities bring
  • Lili shared her favorite inspiring quote with us which was, “Be relentless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire.” (unknown)
