Episode 9: Pain is Just Weakness Leaving the Body with Hannah Waite

Episode 9: Pain is Just Weakness Leaving the Body with Hannah Waite
Episode 9: Pain is Just Weakness Leaving the Body with Hannah Waite

On this episode, I interview my dear friend Hannah Waite, whom I first met as a roommate at the Naval Academy Summer Seminar, a summer camp for rising seniors considering attending the Naval Academy. Although neither of us nor our third roommate and friend, Kristine, did not attend the Naval Academy, we are all thankful that it brought us lifelong friendship in one another! Hannah describes inspiration as an intrinsic thing within side each of us that is motivated by external things – people, places, things, experiences, everything that happens to us! She also shares that everything inspires her, either positively or negatively, to live her life to further bring joy to others and fulfill God’s plan for her life.

References:

  • Hannah is in school working towards achieving her Master’s in Speech Language Pathology at University of Southern Mississippi (USM)
  • Hannah’s husband, Aaron, inspired her to take time when she is driving to intentionally talk out loud with God in prayer.
  • She shares that she struggled with an eating disorder for about four years
  • If your or someone you know struggles with an eating disorder, please seek professional help. You can find resources to get started HERE or call or text the National Eating Disorders Helpline at 800-931-2237.
  • Her advice to anyone struggling with an eating disorder is to “tell somebody”
  • One of Hannah’s life goals is to own a Chick-Fil-A (how awesome is that?!)
  • Hannah’s favorite quote stuck with her after doing a flexed arm hang at a summer fair for the Marine Corps, “pain is just weakness leaving the body.”

Episode 8: Dwelling Together in Unity with Nako Caternor

Episode 8: Dwelling Together in Unity with Nako Caternor
Episode 8: Dwelling Together in Unity with Nako Caternor

On this episode, I have the great joy of chatting with my friend and classmate, Nako Caternor. Nako is a shining light for Jesus Christ and uses her gift and calling to help others on every part of her journey. She defines inspiration as, “something or someone motivating you intrinsically to make a certain type of change.” Nako is most inspired by her mother (and so am I now!) who graduated in the inaugural class that allowed women at the Ghana Military Academy, and she is now a minister. Nako lives her life treating others with love and respect, especially because she doesn’t always know what others are going through.

References:

  • Nako appreciates walking alongside others to help them, just as team leaders supported her in her journey of passing West Point’s “Survival Swim” class
  • Her advice to people who are struggling is, “don’t stay alone,” and she advocates for doing life with others and in a supportive community
  • A long-term goal of Nako’s is to get a doctoral degree someday, and her daily goal is to help others
  • She shares her two boundaries for helping people: (1) help people who are accepting of help and (2) help people who genuinely want to grow and not stay stagnant
  • Nako left us with an inspiring song she sang with the Glee Club at West Point that also contains inspiring Bible verses, specifically Psalm 133, Chichester Psalms

Episode 4: Suffering Produces Perseverance with Grace Andrews

Episode 4: Suffering Produces Perseverance with Grace Andrews
Episode 4: Suffering Produces Perseverance with Grace Blackwell

On this episode of the You Inspire Me Podcast, Hope interviews Mrs. Grace “Blackwell” Andrews on overcoming tribulations to find greater joy in new journeys. Grace defines as inspiration as “something impactful enough to change the way that you live or see the world.” Some of the most inspiring people in Grace’s life are her sister – who lives an empathetic life and is always willing to bear other’s burdens – and her husband, Tanner – who was the first person to show her Christ and walk with her on her faith journey.

References

  • Grace talks about her history with scoliosis, a condition that results in spinal curvature.
  • When confronted with loss of feeling in her arms and legs, she was asked, “Why are you doing this (playing soccer)?” This challenged her to explore her passions in other areas, leading her to become West Point’s Respect Captain and, now, a Field Artillery Officer.
  • In talking about loneliness and isolation while living apart from her husband, Grace shares a message from Tanner that helps her rely on God in the toughest moments; he says, “No one will ever be there for you one hundred percent of the time except for Christ.”
  • Grace leaves us with her favorite verse, Romans 5:3-4 (NIV) which reads, “Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.”
